Our society is obsessed with winning. I see it all over social media: especially on LinkedIn, but what about the value of learning to lose?
My daughter has been throwing fits every time I beat her in Uno recently. It reminds me of when I used to cry every time I got knocked out in a game of Knock-Out Basketball in grade school. Every time! Until I was in 5th grade.
Have you ever made a formative mistake? One that felt really big in the moment, maybe even disastrous, but ultimately catalyzed a learning experience for you that shaped who you have become?
Comparison is the enemy of contentment and can be a deterrent of progress. Can it be valuable to look at and learn from the journey of others? Absolutely. However, if you determine your own worth through comparing yourself to other people it can kill your joy and rob you of potential growth.
At Appointed to Lead we believe that every student has the capability to be an effective leader. It is our mission to help each student we work with become the leader they were made to be. That includes inspiring, equipping, and empowering student-leaders who have been previously overlooked.
Our founder, Stuart Gordon, has always been passionate about Leadership development. In 2012, as a Caldwell Fellow graduating from the NC State College of Education, Stuart was blessed to be selected as a founding member of the Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy (WYMLA).
